Ironmaster Adjustable Dumbbells Review

Ironmaster Adjustable
Like the Yes4All Adjustable Dumbbells set, the Ironmaster Adjustable Dumbbells System is more old school. These have the lower tech spinlock collar that holds the weights firmly in place. They come in 45 lb and 75 lb sets with an optional 120 lb add-on kit.

Benefits of Ironmaster Adjustable Dumbbells

Feel and Fit of Standard Fixed Dumbbell Set

One of the biggest pluses to the Ironmaster system is their size and shape.  While they adjust reasonably fast, they still feel solid in your grip.  The weights themselves nettle tightly together so there is no rattling or slippage. The sizing is also a big plus for curling. Other systems like the Bowflex SelectTech may adjust faster but their longer design makes curling a bit more ungainly.

No plastic or fragile parts to break

The combination of cast iron, welded steel, and chrome plated handles make the Ironmaster system one of the most indestructible sets on the market. And they come with a limited lifetime guarantee which means they most likely will last a lifetime.

Weight Versatility

The Ironmaster comes in a 45 lb set and a 75 lb set with addon weights available. They also carry a 57.5 lb adjustable kettlebell,  which I think is pretty awesome. So whichever size or design you want to start with, there is room to grow.

Upgradable

ironmaster adjustable dumbbell reviewAdding additional weights is no problem with this system. The screw-on collar makes it easy to add additional plates when more resistance is needed. The Quick-Lock Dumbbell Add-on Kit adds 45 lbs to each dumbbell bringing them up to 120 lbs each.

Four 22.5 lb weight plates and longer locking screws allow for larger dumbbell sizes of 70 to 120lbs.

Won’t Break if Dropped

Because of their solid design, dropping these weights won’t be a problem.  At least not for the weights themselves.  But they could do serious damage to your floors so consider this before letting them drop. A thick foam exercise mat may help.

Drawbacks of the Ironmaster Adjustable Dumbbells

Longer Time to Adjust

Unlike a lot of the newer, high-tech adjustable dumbbells, these take a little bit longer to adjust. There isn’t a dial or quick selection pin with these. Instead, you will have to manually remove the collar and slide the individual plates on and off, one by one until you reach your desired resistance.

With these, it simply isn’t possible to perform supersets quickly unless you’re using the same weight or purchase a second set of handles and collars.

Can Damage Floors

As previously mentioned; while these are very durable, they are heavy. If you drop it from a substantial height, without any cushioning, it won’t be long before there’s a large crack in the concrete or a chip in the dumbbells.

Will Need Extra Storage Space

These adjustable dumbbells require the use of plates, so you will need a little bit of additional space to store the extra weights included in the set. Especially if you choose to purchase the stand.

Pricey

These are one of the more expensive sets on the market.  Comparable to the Bowflex SelectTech 560 set which has more bells are whistles and are easier to adjust, you are paying extra for the durability and lifetime warranty on the Ironmasters.

Summary

If you don’t mind taking an extra minute to change the weights around to the necessary resistance for an exercise or purchasing a few extra accessories, then this set is for you. Although you will need to have some extra space, this usually won’t be a problem for most people. If you want a faster transition between weights, be sure to check out the Bowflex Sets and the PowerBlock Series.

In terms of durability and reliability, these dumbbells win hands-down. There are fewer moving pieces than any other option and they’re difficult to break. The limited lifetime warranty means that these weights will last and last. In conclusion, if you’re looking for the most reliable and durable set of dumbbells, these are the way to go.
