PowerBlock vs. Bowflex, that’s the matchup we tend to be asked a lot and while there’s no easy answer, we prefer the PowerBock Elite Adjustable Dumbbells system slightly over the Bowflex. Compared to any of the Bowflex systems, the PowerBlocks simply offer greater customizability with their expansion packs and an overall more reliable design.
But it must be said; we consider the dial adjustment on all of the Bowflex SelectTech and StairMaster sets to be superior to any other set on the market.
Benefits of the PowerBlock Elite Adjustable Dumbbells
Compact, Cube Design
A lot of users may overlook this, especially if you’re new to weightlifting. The tight, square design of these dumbbells is a huge plus any time you’re performing an exercise. By manufacturing the actual weight closer to your wrists and where the grip is, you experience less lateral movement and a greater emphasis on the muscle being used.
This design not only helps to prevent injury but also makes it easier to move the weights to their starting position for an exercise – A huge benefit, especially when you get into heavier sets.
This may not be a big deal for some, but as you progress through your workouts you’re going to need to provide your body greater resistance to continue to see results. For some, up to 50 or 70 pounds may be enough, however, it’s always nice to know that you can surpass those numbers with these dumbbells.
PowerBlock offers 70-90 pound expansion kits that simply attach to the weight and act as a normal adjustment. For the majority of people with a home gym, having up to 90-pound dumbbells is more than enough. Any higher than that, and you may want to start purchasing individual dumbbells in that weight area later.
Quick and Easy to Adjust
The big question that comes up time and time again is, “How hard is it to adjust the weight and how long does it take?” Once you learn how to adjust the PowerBlock dumbbells to your desired weight, it takes less than 3-6 seconds to move from one selection to the next. Anyone can do it, and with everything else, the more you do it the better you get.
Warranty and Customer Service
These dumbbells are manufactured in the USA, so you know you’re not getting a cheap knockoff like some items found online. Furthermore, PowerBlock has a reputation for providing great customer service.
If a part does break or needs replacing it typically only takes a quick email to get ahold of a PowerBlock representative and a new part shipped. PowerBlock backs these dumbbells with a 10 year home use warranty so you know your investment is protected.
DrawBacks of the PowerBlock Elite Adjustable Dumbbells
Limitation of Some Exercises
If you’re really into doing tricep extensions you may have to find another way to do them with these. Because of the cube design, it can difficult, or almost impossible to do a traditional overhead tricep extension with a single dumbbell.
There are ways around this, like using 2 lighter weights instead of 1 or simply adjusting your body for a different grip, but keep in mind you may need a little creativity to accommodate these weights.
Supersets can be Tricky
If your workouts are packed with several supersets, you may find it an annoyance to have to constantly adjust the dumbbells after each set to prepare for the next. This is really a minor detail since it doesn’t take long to adjust, but some weightlifters prefer to go immediately from one exercise to the next, as opposed to a short rest period between exercises.
If you find yourself on the fence with these dumbbells, go ahead and get them. You won’t be disappointed in their build, performance, or design. These dumbbells make a great addition to any home gym and are perfect for anyone who is serious about getting in shape or staying in shape. In the event you need more resistance or a replacement part, PowerBlock makes it easy to get what you need when you need it.
